DAILY RUSH HOUR: Ilhan Omar’s four-word answer, Trump’s CNN blowup, and a debate that got personal

What do you say when somebody asks whether you were ever married to your brother?

Ilhan Omar’s answer to Chris Hayes was four words: “Not to my knowledge.”

That stopped me in my tracks. And when I put the same hypothetical question to Karolos, his answer was considerably shorter. We had quite a discussion about that one.

Omar also told Hayes she’s living paycheck to paycheck, described what federal agents took during a search of her home, and offered her theory about who’s behind the investigation. Then came a Fox News report raising new questions about her name and identity. We got into all of it.

President Trump, meanwhile, was having a rather lively encounter with reporters over Russia sanctions. CNN’s Kaitlan Collins was called a “dummy,” and an ABC reporter received an even less flattering assessment. The president was not in the mood for a seminar on press relations.

And in Michigan, Mike Rogers and Abdul El-Sayed clashed over the Muslim Brotherhood. ABC presented one version of the exchange; we played the longer debate clip and a CNN panel discussion that complicated the picture. That raised a question I’ve been asking for years: Why are some political candidates expected to answer for the views of people around them while others get treated as victims for being asked?

Somewhere along the way, we also got into an NFL player reportedly reaching for a gun after a fight, the Steelers canceling a fan event in Paris, and Hanson’s “MMMBop.” That’s quite a Thursday.

Rush Hour airs Monday through Friday and moves quickly through the day’s hottest political stories, breaking developments and media absurdities. It is the fastest hour in American media because there is always more happening than the legacy media has time—or desire—to explain.
