Renaming the Gulf of Mexico: ‘I’d also be fine with the Gulf of Trump’

by

President-elect Donald Trump raised eyebrows with a radical idea he tossed into his remarks during a press conference less than two weeks before he returns to the White House.

Trump again showed his marketing skills as he touted the “appropriate” change he seemed to plan for the Gulf of Mexico.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring,” the former and future president said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“That covers a lot of territory,” Trump said. “The Gulf of America. What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate.”

“We’re going to change because we do most of the work there and it’s ours,” he said. “It’s appropriate, and Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”

Following his recent comments about annexing Canada and Greenland, Trump ignited headlines with his surprising promise.

“Trump says he will change the name of the Gulf of Mexico. Can he do that?” the Associated Press asked.

And for some, it was the signal to do something. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) revealed she is ready to file legislation to make the name change official.

“It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as,” she wrote in a post on X. “As soon as President Trump made his announcement, I directed my staff to get the bill drafted.”

“Mexican cartels currently use the Gulf of Mexico to traffic humans, drugs, weapons, and God knows what else while the Mexican government allows them to do it,” Greene wrote. “The American people are footing the bill to protect and secure the maritime waterways for commerce to be conducted. Our U.S. armed forces protect the area from any military threats from foreign countries.”

The AP noted that “other countries don’t have to go along.” with any planned name change by Trump or another president.

“The International Hydrographic Organization — of which both the United States and Mexico are members — works to ensure all the world’s seas, oceans and navigable waters are surveyed and charted uniformly, and also names some of them. There are instances where countries refer to the same body of water or landmark by different names in their own documentation,” the outlet explained.

“The body of water has been depicted with that name for more than four centuries, an original determination believed to have been taken from a Native American city of ‘Mexico,'” AP noted.

On social media, X users were quick to weigh in – with some finding it “silly” and others noting why Trump is making perfect sense.
