Dem senator threatens U.S. military: ‘There will be consequences’ after Trump leaves office

by

In a jaw-dropping outburst that stunned even CNN’s usually friendly audience, Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) openly warned members of America’s armed forces that they could face “consequences” once President Donald Trump leaves office—if they dare enforce military rules against his fellow Democrat, Sen. Mark Kelly.

The threat came Monday, just hours after the Pentagon confirmed it is reviewing Kelly’s participation in a now-infamous video where he and five other Democratic lawmakers urged U.S. service members to “refuse illegal orders.” President Trump didn’t mince words, blasting the stunt as “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR” and declaring the lawmakers “SHOULD BE IN JAIL.”

During an appearance on CNN’s The Arena, host Kasie Hunt asked Gallego how much trust he had in the military justice system if Kelly’s case proceeds. Gallego insisted he had “a lot” of trust—before dropping his not-so-subtle threat.

“Donald Trump is going to be gone in a couple years,” Gallego warned. “And if you’re part of the military that is going after sitting senators, sitting members of Congress, and part of the weaponization of government, there will be consequences, without a doubt.”

He went even further, claiming that military officers involved in any tribunal should be “looking over their shoulders” once Trump leaves office. According to Gallego, the “safest thing possible” for them is simply to follow the Constitution and hope for the best.

“You will never, ever, ever even be half the man that Sen. Kelly is,” he said, addressing Pete Hegseth directly.

“You, sir, are a coward! And the fact that you are following this order from the president shows how big of a coward you are. And I can’t wait ’til you no longer are the secretary of defense.”

The controversy began when Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) posted a coordinated video on X last week featuring Kelly and several other Democrats—most of them former military or intelligence officers. The group dramatically read lines warning troops that “threats to the Constitution aren’t just coming from abroad, but right here at home.”

Then came the kicker: “You can refuse illegal orders. You must refuse illegal orders.”

Joining Kelly in the video were Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-PA), Rep. Maggie Goodlander (D-NH), Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO), and Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA).

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt slammed the lawmakers in an appearance on Fox News, calling them “deranged” and accusing them of undermining the commander-in-chief.

“They can’t identify illegal orders because there are no illegal orders,” Leavitt said bluntly.

Even Slotkin, during an ABC interview on Sunday, sheepishly admitted she was “not aware” of any illegal orders from President Trump—undercutting the entire premise of the video.

While Democrats insist they’re defending the Constitution, their latest stunt looks suspiciously like an effort to sow distrust in the chain of command—and Gallego’s televised warning to U.S. troops only reinforces that perception.

When a sitting senator warns military officers to “watch their backs,” Americans have every reason to ask: Who is really trying to “weaponize” government?
