Just when New Jersey taxpayers thought their wallets couldn’t take another beating, Trenton found a new way to spend their money.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced this week that the Garden State will shovel another $12 million into its taxpayer-funded deportation defense program, bringing the total cost to a staggering $20.2 million.
The move comes as chaos continues to swirl around Newark’s Delaney Hall detention facility, where weeks of protests, arrests, clashes with law enforcement, and political grandstanding have turned the immigration debate into a full-blown spectacle.
“We are increasing funding for the Detention Deportation Defense Initiative by $12 million – for a total of $20.2 million,” Sherrill declared on social media.
The governor also unveiled a new “Rapid Legal Response Initiative,” a statewide effort designed to expand legal representation for migrants facing deportation proceedings.

According to the administration, the expanded funding will help provide legal services to low-income immigrants and detainees, including individuals housed at Delaney Hall. State officials argue the programs are necessary to ensure access to due process and legal representation as federal immigration enforcement ramps up.
Sherrill defended the spending by invoking constitutional protections and human rights. “Every person deserves to be treated with dignity,” the governor said. “These include access to due process and a fair hearing under the law, regardless of where you were born.”
Critics, however, see something entirely different: another expensive taxpayer-funded benefit program arriving at a moment when New Jersey residents already face some of the highest property taxes and cost-of-living burdens in America.
For nearly two weeks, Delaney Hall has become ground zero in New Jersey’s immigration battle. Protesters and immigration activists have repeatedly confronted federal authorities outside the facility. State and local police have made numerous arrests after demonstrators allegedly ignored curfews and blocked access points. The Department of Homeland Security has vowed “zero tolerance for rioters” amid escalating tensions. Reports indicate hundreds of detainees have participated in hunger strikes while activists accuse facility operators of maintaining poor conditions. Meanwhile, DHS has rejected many of those claims, insisting detainees receive medical care, meals, and due process protections. Adding fuel to the fire, investigations and reports have highlighted the involvement of a broad coalition of activist organizations backing demonstrations surrounding the facility, while New Jersey officials have simultaneously pursued legal action against GEO Group, the private company operating Delaney Hall.
Fox News contributor Tomi Lahren blasted the governor’s announcement, writing: “Once again, using the tax dollars of Americans to benefit illegals. At least Democrats are finally admitting it.”
Once again, using the tax dollars of Americans to benefit illegals. At least Democrats are finally admitting it. Shameless traitors. All of you.

New Jersey Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger was equally blunt. “The Governor spending over $20 million for a defense fund for illegal aliens is outrageous at a time when the budget is a disaster and the residents of New Jersey are struggling with one of the highest tax burdens in the nation.”
