If California Governor Gavin Newsom was hoping for sympathy, he may have accomplished the opposite.
During a recent appearance discussing politics and media, Newsom argued that Democrats need to build what he described as their own “media ecosystem,” suggesting his party has struggled to communicate its message effectively and hasn’t received the kind of support conservatives enjoy from right-leaning media outlets.
That complaint immediately set off a fresh debate—because Democrats already benefit from widespread support across much of the nation’s traditional news landscape.
Newsom’s remarks struck many critics as detached from political reality.
For years, America’s largest legacy news organizations lean left editorially, whether through story selection, framing, or the amount of scrutiny applied to Republican versus Democratic politicians.
Against that backdrop, Newsom’s suggestion that outlets such as CNN or MS NOW have been too tough on him left plenty of commentators scratching their heads.
His argument appears to center less on outright hostility and more on the belief that Democrats have failed to create a coordinated media infrastructure capable of competing with conservative podcasts, digital creators, talk radio and online influencers that have grown significantly over the past decade.
Still, that distinction wasn’t enough to quiet critics.
Social media quickly filled with responses pointing to the long list of national media organizations viewed as center-left or left-leaning, including major broadcast networks, cable outlets, newspapers and digital publications.
One widely shared response summed up the skepticism this way:
“The liberals have so many media outlets it isn’t funny… I could list 50 more easily.”
Newsom’s comments may reflect growing concern within Democratic circles that those older institutions no longer carry the influence they once did. Even so, critics argue there’s a difference between saying Democrats need to improve their digital strategy and suggesting they lack media allies.
Those are two entirely different arguments.
Gavin Newsom claims that Democrats don’t have the same kind of friendly media ecosystem that Trump and conservatives do.
“I don’t see that on MSNBC…I sure as hell don’t see it on CNN. I don’t see it anywhere.”
