CHIEFS COACH LEAVES TRAINING CAMP AFTER WIFE SHOT, SON CHARGED
KANSAS CITY — What should have been another day of preparation for an NFL season turned into an unimaginable family crisis.
Kansas City Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy abruptly left training camp after learning his wife, Mia Bieniemy, had been seriously injured in a shooting at the family’s home in Ashburn, Virginia.
According to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded Sunday evening to reports of a shooting at the residence. Mia Bieniemy was transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Authorities say she is now in stable condition.

On Monday, investigators identified the couple’s youngest son, 27-year-old Elijah Bieniemy, as the suspect.
He has been charged with:
- Malicious wounding
- Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
- Discharging a firearm inside a dwelling
Authorities say Elijah Bieniemy is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center while the investigation continues.
Law enforcement has not publicly disclosed a possible motive, and investigators have released few additional details about what occurred inside the home.
Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid addressed reporters Monday, expressing concern for the Bieniemy family before football.
“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy.”
Reid added that Mia Bieniemy remains hospitalized but stable.
“Mia is stable. She’s a saint, one of God’s good blessings.”
Reid said there is currently no timetable for Eric Bieniemy’s return to the team.
In the meantime, passing game coordinator Joe Bleymaier will assume offensive coordinator responsibilities while Bieniemy remains with his family.
Bieniemy only recently returned to Kansas City after spending three seasons away from the organization.
Widely respected inside the Chiefs locker room, his return was welcomed enthusiastically by players, including star tight end Travis Kelce.
Earlier this year, Kelce said:
“I can’t wait to see him back in the building. He’s one of my favorite coaches of all time.”
Upon rejoining Kansas City, Bieniemy spoke openly about how excited he was to return.
“I feel like a kid in a candy store.”
He added that he looked forward to once again working alongside quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Kelce. Now, football has understandably taken a back seat.
The Bieniemy family has previously spoken publicly about adversity. Their oldest son, Eric Bieniemy III, has cerebral palsy and significant respiratory complications.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Eric Bieniemy spent much of the 2020 season living separately from his family in an effort to reduce the risk of exposing his medically vulnerable son to the virus.
Friends around the NFL have described the family as close-knit and deeply devoted to one another, making Sunday’s shooting all the more shocking to those who know them. The Chiefs have not announced when Bieniemy may return to football operations, emphasizing instead that the organization’s focus remains on supporting him and his family.

Some stories don’t belong in the usual political food fight. This is one of them.
There are no touchdowns to celebrate today. No hot takes. No scoreboards. Just a family living through what has to be one of the darkest moments imaginable.
We don’t know everything that happened inside that Virginia home. Investigators are still piecing it together. What we do know is that one person is hospitalized. A son is facing serious criminal charges. A husband and father left work to sit beside his wife’s hospital bed. It’s easy to forget that the people we watch every Sunday are exactly that—people.
Whatever the legal process ultimately reveals, the Bieniemy family has a long road ahead. For now, the football world can wait.
