BS BULLETIN:
- Melania Trump told “Fox & Friends” she had a “very beautiful childhood” growing up in communist Yugoslavia and said her parents provided a good life for the family.
- The first lady also stressed that the system was “not as free” as the United States and that people had to watch what they did.
- The comments came after Brian Kilmeade asked why Eastern Europeans who experienced communism often have a particular appreciation for freedom and liberty.
Melania Trump has some surprisingly warm memories of growing up behind the Iron Curtain.
But not necessarily of the Iron Curtain itself.
MELANIA TRUMP REFLECTS ON GROWING UP UNDER COMMUNISM

The first lady appeared on “Fox & Friends” Wednesday for a discussion that included her work to reunite Ukrainian children with their families.
That eventually prompted Brian Kilmeade to ask Melania why Eastern Europeans like her seem to understand the “gift of freedom and liberty” differently from many people in the West.
Melania was born in 1970 in what was then communist Yugoslavia and grew up in present-day Slovenia.
Her answer wasn’t quite the horror story Kilmeade’s question might have suggested. “I grew up under communism, and actually, I didn’t miss anything,” Melania said. “I feel I had a very beautiful childhood, and my parents provided a beautiful life for my family.”
But she didn’t stop there. Melania immediately drew a distinction between her happy childhood and the political system surrounding it. “There are certain things you need to be aware of, and you watch over what you do,” she said, adding that life there was “not as free as here in the United States.”
Melania wasn’t arguing that communism itself provided her beautiful childhood. She credited her parents for the life they created for their daughters while acknowledging the restrictions of the government under which they lived, but she didn’t exactly paint the picture of how bad it could be.
She has made a similar distinction before when discussing her upbringing, saying that as a young child she didn’t fully understand the political system around her. She went to school, played sports and spent time with her family while only learning more about the darker realities later in life.
The first lady said her team maintains a direct channel with both Russia and Ukraine and is working on another round of family reunifications.
“We want to reunite as many children as possible,” she said.
Her comments about communism nevertheless generated headlines — particularly because President Trump regularly invokes socialism and communism when attacking his political opponents.
Melania’s recollection offered something considerably more personal and nuanced: You can remember a happy childhood while also remembering that the country around you wasn’t free, but it didn’t give a 5-alarm warning for the downside.
