Amy Klobuchar kisses Somali flag at campaign event — but watch what happens to the American flag

by

BS BULLETIN:

  • Minnesota gubernatorial candidate Amy Klobuchar appeared before a Somali audience in a video circulating Sunday.
  • Klobuchar accepted a small American flag that was upside down and held it that way while addressing the crowd.
  • She also kissed a Somali flag and touted her work involving remittances sent from Minnesota to Somalia.

Amy Klobuchar’s outreach to Minnesota’s Somali community produced one of the stranger campaign videos of the weekend.

The Democratic senator, now running for governor, appeared before a Somali audience and accepted a small American flag that had been handed to her upside down.

She continued holding it upside down while speaking.

The moment quickly spread across social media Sunday, where critics seized on the inverted Stars and Stripes and another part of Klobuchar’s appearance: the senator enthusiastically kissing a Somali flag.

Klobuchar also spoke briefly in Somali and discussed her work on issues important to the state’s large Somali-American population.

Among them was the ability of Somali Americans to send money to relatives abroad.

Klobuchar recalled working with banks and federal officials after financial institutions became reluctant to process remittances to Somalia because of concerns involving terrorism financing and regulatory compliance.

She told the audience she had worked to keep legitimate money transfers available.

The viral clip prompted critics to connect her remarks to Minnesota’s much broader fraud scandals involving government programs.

But those are separate issues. The video does not establish that the remittances Klobuchar discussed involved fraudulently obtained money, and claims circulating online suggesting otherwise go beyond what the footage demonstrates.

The upside-down American flag nevertheless arrives with some awkward Minnesota history.

An American flag was displayed upside down during a Somali Independence Day celebration in St. Cloud in July. Organizers said that incident was accidental, and police corrected the flag after being called to the event.

Klobuchar has made outreach to Minnesota’s Somali community a visible part of her political career. Her Senate office lists appearances at Somali community events and visits to Somali-owned businesses among her activities in the Twin Cities.

Now, in the closing stretch of her campaign for governor, a few seconds of that outreach are attracting considerably more attention than the policy discussion surrounding it.

MY QUICK TAKE

Politicians have been mangling flags, eating disastrous ethnic food and attempting foreign-language greetings since somebody discovered that campaigning involved leaving the house.

But there is a basic rule here that shouldn’t require a campaign consultant charging $12,000 a month: When somebody hands a United States senator an American flag upside down, turn it around.

That’s it. No focus group required.
