Speaking from the White House this week, President Donald Trump blasted renewed efforts to haul Bill and Hillary Clinton before Congress over disgraced financier and convicted sex predator Jeffrey Epstein. With depositions now scheduled, Trump said dragging the former first couple back into the spotlight is nothing short of a “shame.”
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) confirmed that the Clintons are set to sit for a closed-door deposition on February 27, after months of resistance to congressional subpoenas tied to Epstein-related records.
“Republicans and Democrats on the Oversight Committee have been clear: no one is above the law—and that includes the Clintons,” Comer wrote in a statement. “After delaying and defying duly issued subpoenas for six months, the House Oversight Committee moved swiftly to initiate contempt of Congress proceedings in response to their non-compliance.”
But Trump, who has repeatedly urged the country to move past the Epstein saga, struck an unusual tone when asked about the Clintons’ looming testimony. While acknowledging the brutal investigations he himself endured, Trump expressed personal regret over watching the former president and former secretary of state dragged back into controversy.
“I think it’s a shame, to be honest. I always liked him. Her? Yeah, she’s a very capable woman. She was better in debating than some of the other people, I will tell you that. She was smarter. She’s a smart woman. I hate to see it in many ways. I hate to see it, but then look at me, they went after me like — you know, they wanted me to go to jail for the rest of my life.”
Trump’s remarks came as his administration continues releasing long-sealed Epstein-related files—moves that have reignited political finger-pointing on both sides of the aisle. Bill Clinton, who once associated with Epstein, has long denied any wrongdoing. Trump has also acknowledged past social contact with Epstein but has repeatedly distanced himself from the disgraced financier.
Meanwhile, Democrats are making no secret of their plans to turn the Epstein issue back on Trump should they regain power on Capitol Hill.
“We are absolutely going to have Donald Trump testify under oath,” Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) told NBC News.
