Tennessee State Senator Paul Rose found himself cornered in the Capitol halls Tuesday by a relentless activist-journalist—and things got heated fast.
The agitator? Tennessee Holler founder Justin Kanew, who decided to trail the Republican lawmaker with a camera rolling, peppering him with loaded accusations about a bill concerning the naming of the West Bank. The proposal would require Tennessee to refer to the territory as “Judea and Samaria”—a term rooted in historical and biblical tradition but controversial among critics.
Kanew didn’t exactly ease into the conversation. He went straight for the jugular, repeatedly demanding: “Who gave you that bill? Senator Rose, who gave you that bill about the West Bank? Who gave it to you?”
He didn’t stop there. As Rose attempted to go about his business, Kanew escalated with a sweeping accusation: “Are you worried at all about Israel’s influence on our government as they push us to war? You know they pushed us into a war, Senator Rose, and here you are doing their bidding. What do you think about that?”
Then came the kicker—Kanew doubling down while invoking his own background: “You’re doing Israel’s bidding as they push us into war. I say this as a Jew with family in Israel, Senator Rose. Why are you doing Israel’s bidding as they push us into war?”
At that point, Rose had clearly had enough of the ambush-style interrogation. The senator fired back with a remark that instantly turned heads: “You know, if I was at home, I’d bust your face right now, but I’m not.”
Kanew, sensing blood—or at least viral content—quickly responded, “Are you threatening me?”
Rose walked it back just as quickly: “No, sir, I’m not.”
An aide tried to defuse the moment, chiming in, “I’m the witness that he didn’t,” but Kanew wasn’t letting it go, shooting back, “The camera is the witness that he did, so don’t worry about that.”
Still undeterred, Kanew kept up the barrage, repeating his central claim almost verbatim while attempting to broaden the issue: “Are you concerned at all that you’re doing Israel’s bidding as they push us into war, Senator Rose? There are Republicans who have issue with this. It’s not just Democrats. This isn’t a partisan issue. Why is it our business to be changing the name of something?”
By the time Rose made his escape into an elevator, the spectacle had fully devolved into a shouting match. Kanew taunted the departing lawmaker with a final jab: “Take a swing at me then, Paul. Go ahead. See what happens. Paul, you’re too old to be doing stuff like that, man. You’re too old to be threatening people, dude. Maybe once upon a time, Paul, but I don’t see it right now. I don’t see it. I don’t see it these days, Paul.”
Strip away the theatrics, and what’s left is a familiar story: a politician getting ambushed by a camera-wielding activist looking to provoke a reaction—and getting one. Whether you call it accountability or gotcha politics, one thing’s clear: in today’s viral age, the real battle isn’t just over policy—it’s over the clip
“Senator, who gave you the West Bank bill?”
ROSE: “If I was at home I’d bust your face right now.”🤔
