CNN issued an apology Sunday after Rep. Maxine Waters accused the “white media” of creating the impression that establishment Democrats and Democratic Socialists are engaged in an increasingly bitter political fight.
Waters made the accusation during an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union,” saying the disagreement has been largely manufactured by journalists.
“I think it’s the media, particularly the white media, that would like to see the conflict,” Waters said.
CNN immediately launched an internal review to determine which reporters had been recklessly observing things that were actually happening.
“We recognize that noticing political conflict can itself create political conflict,” network diversity consultant Holden D. Narrative said. “Going forward, CNN journalists will be required to obtain permission from both sides before noticing that they hate each other.”
The new policy comes amid a growing feud between Democratic Party leaders and members of the Democratic Socialists of America, which officials stressed should not be interpreted as evidence of a growing feud between Democratic Party leaders and members of the Democratic Socialists of America.
Reporters will also receive updated guidance on potentially inflammatory terminology.
“Civil war” will become “spirited family conversation.”
“Socialist takeover” will be replaced by “unexpected ideological houseguest.”

Waters welcomed the changes but cautioned journalists against jumping to conclusions simply because Democrats and socialists are publicly attacking one another.
“If the media would stop reporting on the fighting,” Waters reportedly explained, “people might finally understand that there isn’t any fighting.”
CNN thanked the congresswoman for clearing that up.
