A discussion about younger voters and the appeal of democratic socialism quickly turned personal Wednesday when co-host Joy Behar criticized White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and referred to her as a “DEI hire” during a heated segment on ABC’s The View.
The exchange began after the panel played remarks from Leavitt, who argued that some younger Americans are increasingly attracted to democratic socialism because they have been “raised with silver spoons in their mouths.”
The comment drew immediate criticism from the panel.
“Gross,” Behar said after watching the clip.
Behar then shifted the conversation from Leavitt’s policy remarks to her personal life, referencing Leavitt’s marriage to real estate developer Nicholas Riccio.
“She has all these things. She got an education. She married a rich guy, so talk about a DEI hire,” Behar said.
Co-host Sunny Hostin expanded on the criticism, arguing that Leavitt’s financial circumstances may make it difficult for her to relate to the economic challenges facing many younger Americans.
“I think to Joy’s point, you know, it’s really rich for her to, at 28 years old, married to a 65-year-old, I mean that’s her choice,” Hostin said before discussing the financial pressures facing many members of Generation Z.
Hostin cited economic data suggesting younger workers face rising housing costs, wage pressures, and difficulties achieving traditional financial milestones.
Not everyone on the panel agreed with the criticism.
Former Trump administration official Alyssa Farah Griffin offered a partial defense of Leavitt, arguing that the White House press secretary has achieved significant professional success on her own.
“Just to be fair to Karoline, she’s been personally very successful,” Griffin said. “She’s had a big career in politics and media. She’s made over $1 million herself.”
Behar quickly pushed back. “She’s 28 years old!” she responded.
Griffin acknowledged that Leavitt’s background could create what she described as a potential “blind spot” regarding the financial realities confronting younger Americans, but she also emphasized that many of those economic concerns are real and widespread.
“It’s never been harder for a generation to get ahead in the last 50 years,” Griffin said. “The average first-time home buyer is now in their 40s.”
Recent polling has shown growing support among some younger Americans for government-led economic programs, while others remain skeptical of socialism and favor market-based approaches. At the same time, concerns about housing affordability, student debt, inflation, and wages continue to shape political attitudes across generational lines.
Leavitt has become one of the most visible spokespeople for the Trump administration and frequently appears on television defending administration policies. Her rapid rise in Republican politics has made her a recurring target of criticism from political opponents as well as a prominent figure among supporters.
The latest controversy also highlights a recurring tension in modern political commentary: whether public figures should be judged primarily on their policy arguments or whether personal circumstances and background are fair subjects for public scrutiny.
For now, the exchange has generated significant reaction online, with supporters and critics of both Leavitt and The View debating whether the discussion crossed a line from policy disagreement into personal attack.
