The Democratic Socialists of America confirmed Wednesday that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is once again a member in good standing after officials discovered she had been practicing independent socialism without authorization for seven years.
AOC’s membership expired in 2019, a lapse that apparently went unnoticed while DSA continued publicly referring to her as one of its members.
“This is obviously embarrassing,” a DSA official said. “For seven years, Alexandria has essentially been freelancing. That is not how collective ownership works.”
The confusion surfaced after AOC said she belonged to the New York City DSA but not the national organization — something DSA officials discovered isn’t actually possible under the organization’s membership structure.
“We immediately launched an investigation,” a national official said. “Fortunately, we found no evidence that she engaged in capitalism during the lapse.”
Officials said investigators reviewed AOC’s voting record, public statements and financial activity before determining she remained ideologically socialist despite her expired paperwork.
“She accumulated wealth, but she consistently demanded that other wealthy people surrender theirs,” the official said. “That weighed heavily in her favor.”
The membership problem took on added urgency as DSA chapters began discussing a possible effort to draft Ocasio-Cortez for president in 2028.
“You can run the United States without an active socialist membership,” one DSA organizer explained. “But obviously we’d prefer to have the paperwork in order before taking control of the means of production.”
AOC has now renewed her membership.
Officials say the seven-year outbreak of unauthorized individualism has been successfully contained.
