Former Sen. Sherrod Brown has put his Republican opponent’s own words at the center of a new Ohio Senate campaign ad—and given an Ohio voter the last word.
The video shows residents watching remarks Sen. Jon Husted made in March about poverty and food assistance.
“People living in poverty are just not very experienced at navigating the real world,” Husted says in the clip. He describes a woman who, he said, had used SNAP benefits throughout her life and did not understand “how money works at a grocery store.”
“So you literally have to teach people how to budget,” Husted says.

The ad cuts between Husted’s remarks and the residents’ reactions. In the shorter version Brown posted on social media, a woman responds, “F*ck that,” immediately before Brown’s campaign approval line.
Husted’s comments drew criticism when he first made them in March. Brown’s campaign has now brought them back into view as the two compete in November’s special election for the Senate seat Husted was appointed to fill in 2025. The ad drew praise from Brown supporters and criticism from some viewers who questioned both its framing and its profanity. An overwhelming run of comments on X supported Husted.
