California Democrat Katie Porter had a full-blown on-camera meltdown when pressed on a basic question she apparently didn’t like—how she plans to win over Republican voters in her bid for governor. Spoiler alert: she doesn’t seem to think she needs them.
In a newly-released segment of a previously taped CBS News interview, Porter grew visibly irritated and defensive when reporter Julie Watts dared to ask how she planned to appeal to the 40% of California voters who supported Donald Trump.
“What do you say to the 40% of California voters, who you’ll need in order to win, who voted for Trump?” asked Watts.
Porter snapped back, “How would I need them in order to win, Ma’am?”
When Watts reasonably pointed out that unless Porter expects to win 60% of the vote, she’ll have to earn support beyond just the far-left base, the Democrat continued pushing a fantasy scenario in which she faces off against a Republican in the general election and automatically secures all non-Trump voters.
“In a general election, yes,” Porter said. “If it’s me versus a Republican, I think that I will win the people who did not vote for Trump.”
But when Watts pressed further—asking what happens if Porter ends up facing another Democrat—things went south. Fast.
Watts: “So, how do you not intend that to be the case? Are you gonna ask them not to run?”
Porter: “No, no. I’m saying I’m gonna build the support. I have the support already in terms of name recognition… I represented Orange County. I represented a purple area. I have stood on my own two feet and won Republican votes before, and that’s not something every candidate in this race can say…”
But despite claiming to have earned Republican support in the past, Porter seemed offended by the mere suggestion she might need to appeal to Trump voters to win a statewide race.
When Watts pointed out the contradiction, Porter became visibly agitated.
“You asked me if I needed them to win. I feel like this is unnecessarily argumentative. What is your question?” she snapped, throwing her hands up toward the interviewer’s face.
Watts calmly explained that the question wasn’t argumentative, adding that “every other candidate has answered this question.”
Rather than answer—or even clarify her own position—Porter tried to bail.
“I don’t want to keep doing this. I’m gonna call it. Thank you,” she said, attempting to remove her microphone mid-interview.
When asked if she was ending the interview, she confirmed: “Nope. Not like this I’m not. Not with seven follow-ups to every single question you ask.”
In other words, Porter—who wants to run the nation’s most populous state—couldn’t handle a few basic follow-up questions from a journalist doing her job.
And it didn’t stop there.
Watts: “You’ve never had to have a conversation with a reporter?”
Porter: “To end an interview.”
When Watts suggested continuing respectfully—allowing Porter the option not to answer if she chose—Porter didn’t budge.
“I don’t want to have an unhappy experience with you and I don’t want this all on camera,” Porter said.
Translation: She didn’t want voters seeing what she’s really like under pressure.
According to Axios’ Alex Thompson and independent journalist Yashar Ali, the clip was provided by someone who used to work closely with Porter—who offered a blunt warning:
“Now imagine what she’s like when there aren’t cameras around.”
Unfortunately, we don’t have to imagine too hard. Porter has long been accused of mistreating staff and creating a toxic work environment. In 2024, a former staffer claimed:
“She has made multiple staffers cry and people are generally so anxious to even staff her because if ANYTHING goes wrong she flips out on whatever staffer is present.”
While Porter may have built her brand on whiteboards and viral moments, this interview showed voters a different side: defensive, thin-skinned, and unwilling to answer basic electoral math questions without blowing a gasket.
If she can’t handle a sit-down with CBS, how exactly is she supposed to lead the state of California?
