Luke & Laura forever: General Hospital icon Anthony Geary dies at 78

by

The soap world is reeling after the death of General Hospital legend Anthony Geary.

The actor — forever known to millions as Luke Spencer — died Sunday in the Netherlands, just three days after undergoing surgery. He was 78.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by his husband, Claudio Gama, who spoke to TV Insider in an emotional statement.

“It was a shock for me and our families and our friends. For more than 30 years, Tony has been my friend, my companion, my husband.”

Geary, one of the most recognizable faces in daytime television history, rose to superstardom in the late 1970s and early 1980s when General Hospital became must-see TV. His rebellious Luke Spencer — paired with Genie Francis’ Laura — helped turn the ABC soap into a cultural phenomenon.

The duo were crowned daytime’s ultimate “supercouple,” driving massive ratings and watercooler buzz across America. Their on-screen romance culminated in a 1981 wedding episode watched by an astonishing 30 million viewers, earning the title “wedding of the year” and becoming the highest-rated hour in U.S. soap opera history. Even Hollywood royalty took notice — Elizabeth Taylor appeared in the episode as Helena Cassadine.

Yet the Luke and Laura storyline was also steeped in controversy. In a 1979 episode, Luke raped Laura during a drunken night in a disco, a scene controversially framed at the time as a “forced seduction” set to Herb Alpert’s Rise. While some viewers were outraged, others embraced the pairing, and writers ultimately steered the characters into a romance that dominated daytime television.

Despite the debate, Luke and Laura became the power couple of their era.

Geary himself was bemused by his unexpected heartthrob status.

“I didn’t set out to be a sex symbol. I’ve always been the first to say I had a receding hairline, a weak chin, a sallow complexion. But if the public finds that attractive, who am I not to be a sex symbol?”

His success was undeniable. Over the course of his career, Geary won a record eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series — a feat unmatched in the genre — before ultimately retiring from General Hospital.

Born in Coalville, Utah in 1947 and raised by Mormon parents, Geary discovered acting early. He earned a scholarship to study theater at the University of Utah before moving to Los Angeles in the 1960s to chase his dream.

His early résumé included appearances on All in the Family, The Partridge Family, Marcus Welby, M.D., and The Mod Squad. In 1971, he joined NBC’s Bright Promise, then moved on to The Young and the Restless, where his character George Curtis shocked viewers by raping heroine Chris Brooks — a storyline later described as startling for its time by The Soap Opera Encyclopedia.

In 1978, Geary made what was supposed to be a short 13-week appearance on General Hospital. Fans had other ideas — and Luke Spencer was born into TV immortality.

Outside soaps, Geary continued acting in films including UHF, The Disorderlies, Crack House, Scorchers, Night of the Warrior, Agony, and Carpool Guy.

In his final interview in 2023 with Soap Opera Digest, Geary reflected peacefully on his career and life beyond the spotlight.

“Not being on the show after having been on it for 30-plus years, practically half my life, I have a feeling of satisfaction because I did it, I showed up, I did my work, I won some trophies, I enjoyed the people I worked with for the most part and I feel I got out in time.”

He added:

“I look back on it and it’s great and it gave me this wonderful life I have now, so I’m not going to complain.

“I live in the city [Amsterdam] that I’ve always wanted to live in my whole life and I have somebody who loves me and I have a life now, that I didn’t have before, no matter how many fan letters or Emmys or how many pages of dialogue to learn. I didn’t have what I have now. So, everything happened at the right time, I guess.”

Geary spent his later years in Amsterdam with Gama and their cat, far from Hollywood but at peace.

He is survived by his husband, Claudio Gama.
